In a tragic incident, a 14-year-old girl, who was repeatedly raped by a man, allegedly after making her drink juice laced with sedatives, in an orphanage in Ameenpur, died early on Wednesday. The girl was admitted to the hospital five days ago but she was not responding to treatment.
The girl’s ordeal began last year when one day, Chielukuri Vijaya, the woman who ran the orphanage asked her to go to the office of Naredla Venugopal Reddy, one of their donors.
There, Reddy allegedly offered a laced juice to the girl and raped her. Though the girl informed the orphanage warden about the incident she was threatened asked to remain silent.
According to the girl, she and several other inmates of the orphanage were sexually assaulted by Reddy multiple times. She further revealed to the police that Venugopal had paid money to the warder, Vijaya, to allow him to share a private room with her.
Investigations revealed that the girl was admitted to the orphanage by her uncle in 2015 after both her parents had died in an accident. After the lockdown, the girl came to her uncle’s place in Bowenpally and informed her uncle that she used to be raped, but she was tortured into keeping quiet.
Unable to bear the torture at her uncle’s home she went to her cousin’s home. When her cousin and other relatives noticed that she was not keeping well, they took her to a local hospital and then filed a police complaint on July 31st.
According to The Hindustan Times the police registered a case under Indian Penal Code Sections376(3) (rape of woman under 16 years of age), 342 (wrongful confinement), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) and several sections of the Protection Of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and transferred it to Ameenpur police station for reasons of jurisdiction.
“When we questioned her relatives, they said that they would hit her when she created a nuisance, but it was never life-threatening. The girl was limping since they got her from the orphanage but they did not take her to hospital for a check-up. We are waiting for PME report to know the exact cause of death,” said the Jeedimetla inspector.
Venugopal Reddy, the hostel warden Vijaya and caretaker Jayadeep were arrested on August 7. The same day, the girl was sent to shelter home at Nimboliadda in the city. The home authorities sent her to Niloufer hospital for a check-up. The next day, she collapsed and was put on a ventilator in the ICU. Her condition continued to deteriorate. She died a week later.
Telangana State Commission for Protection of Child Rights member B. Aparna said that the other girls staying in the orphanage were shifted to different hostels after the rape case. Patancheru Deputy Superintendent of Police R. Rajeshwar Rao said they would seek legal opinion on altering the case following the victim’s death. Her body, meanwhile, was handed over to relatives after the autopsy, with her last rites being performed at Alwal late on Wednesday.
