Karanbeer Singh, the 17-year-old boy from Amritsar who saved lives of 15 children in a school bus accident in 2016 is going to receive the National Bravery Awards this year.

Karanbeer will be getting this prestigious award along with 17 other children who have been selected for their meritorious acts of bravery against all odds. The children have been selected from different parts of the country including 13 states, namely, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Manipur, Mizoram, Karnataka, Punjab, Meghlaya, Odisha, Nagaland, Gujarat, Kerala, Chhattisgarh, and Uttarakhand.

On September 20, 2016, Karnaveer was traveling on the bus with other children when they had the accident. The bus was taking the kids back home from DAV Public School, Neshta. Remembering the incident Karanbir said to Hindustan times, “He (driver) was driving rashly. I had warned him about the narrow bridge ahead that doesn’t have railings but he didn’t listen. Suddenly the front tires were in the air and we landed in the drain.”

All this happened so suddenly that Karanveer was shocked about whats happening.The doors were jammed so Karnaveer had to break the bus door. The water was up till his neck by then.

“I entered the bus again and brought out two girls. My sister was also struggling, so I helped her get out. The driver also came out after breaking the rear glass. We brought out several children,” He further added. Karnaveer was also injured in this accident and had a deep cut on his head and an injury over the eyebrow. Total 7 children died in this incident.

There are total five categories of bravery awards which are Bharat Award, Sanjay Chopra Award, Bapu Gaidhani Award, Geeta Chopra Award, and General National Bravery Awards. Karanbeer will receive the Sanjay Chopra award from Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 24.A reception for the awardees will be hosted by President Ramnath Kovind. All the awardees will participate in the Republic Day parade on January 26.
