College. Where we build a career. Where we build a better ‘us’. Where we run after dreams, grow, learn, make friends, find love, laugh, have fun and create enough of memories to cherish later in life. Isn’t that what describes the best phase of life, the ‘college life’? But it’s quite unfortunate how few college students these days are turning towards the darker side of life at this tender age. This is the age that brings out most numbers of ‘love-failure-turned-cyber criminals’ in society.
This is a case from Vile Parle college, Mumbai. The accused, 21 YO Darsh Satra and the 19 YO victim ie his Junior in college were friends till he proposed her six months ago. Her nightmare started when she turned his proposal down.
Darsh didn’t make a healthy move after being rejected and took things to Instagram to harass the victim. It all started with Darsh sending the girl creepy messages that made her block him right away. But he carried on. He made 15 Instagram profiles with her name and started uploading her pics. Her house, her friends, her celebrations of festivals. He kept clicking her and this made her feel weirdly watched Everytime.
Finally, two weeks ago the girl realized that the matter is running worse day by day and that’s when she filed a case with Naupada police station and sought help from Mumbai police’s cyber crime cell.
“HE USED TO CLICK PICTURES OF HER BUILDING, OF HER WITH HER FRIENDS, AT FESTIVALS AND UPLOAD IT ON THE SITE. HE MADE HER FEEL THAT SHE WAS BEING WATCHED ALL THE TIME.”
Police officers explain the extent of harassment to Mumbai Mirror.
During tracking, police found the IP address of all 15 fake Instagram accounts to be same and that’s when all doubts centered upon Satra who was eventually arrested on Wednesday and sent to custody.
According to Naupada police station’s senior inspector Chandrakant Jadhav,
“WE HAD RECEIVED A COMPLAINT AND HAVE ARRESTED THE ACCUSED UNDER THE IT ACT. INVESTIGATIONS ARE ON.”
We know, after this, many readers might feel awkward about their friendships with certain people, may doubt fellows who are crushing over them or even worse, being insecure about using FB and Insta.
But dear readers, these platforms are made for us. We must be judicious enough not to use it against someone or for fulfilling our wild ill intentions. At the same time let’s remain alert and seek help immediately if we face any bullies. That’s how the internet can be a safer place to share our lives with our loved ones.
