Laxman Singh, 48 was piloting the CSMT (Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus )- Titwala down local train on Saturday afternoon when at around 3:35pm some miscreants threw some offensive things at the motorman’s cabin that looked and smelled like chilly powder. The powder entered laxman’s eyes and he immediately informed the control room.
He reached the next station Mumbra where the Deputy Railway superintendent joined him in his cabin. However, since no replacement could be found against him he washed his eyes with water and kept piloting the Mumbai local that carried 2000 passengers in order to avoid any delay.
Diva, Kopar, Dombivali and Thakurali- Laxman kept piloting the train washing his eyes at these stations till the train arrived at Kalyan at 4:12pm. At Kalyan he was finally relieved and taken to a hospital where he was given medications and allowed to go home afterwards. Because of the protests going on against Pulwama attacks, it took longer than usual to find a replacement along the Western route of Mumbai.
“The DRM Central Railways felicitated Singh for his exemplary service with a certificate and a cash prize. Also the process of filing a police complaint against the miscreants has been initiated” said CPRO Central Railways Sunil Udasi.
Not all heroes wear capes. The burning sensation in his eyes must have been intense. But he didn’t let it overpower his will and dedication for his duty. He valued the time of the passengers and we are all praises for his outstanding courage and tolerance.
