‘Toilet- Ek Prem Katha’, a film that depicted cons of open defecation and encouraged a cleaner India was not just appreciated a lot by the audience but also did fairly well at the box office! It was a movie starring Akshay Kumar, who is known to inculcate new thoughts and provoke nationalism with his recent films and actions.
But recently, a tweet from this actor took Twitter into storms. In this controversial tweet of his, he talked about ‘manual scavenging’.Here is the Tweet that was later deleted from his handle

Well in case you don’t find anything wrong in this tweet, let us tell you where the trouble lies. Manual scavenging is an old method of cleaning human feces by hands using buckets and brooms, it is a caste-based occupation that has been now officially abolished by law in India as a dehumanizing practice. Earlier it was considered to be the job of lower caste people whom Akshay addresses as ‘cleaning soldiers’ but that didn’t save him from the rage of Twitter users.
What's wrong with u.That's manual scavenging.No protective gear.Dangerous.ppl die on job.caste based.its banned.Educate urself then tweet

Hey @Twitter @TwitterIndia
Please take this disgusting tweet glorifying manual scavenging off Twitter. This is ridiculous. https://t.co/xXbmg3vu8e— Junaid (@juneymb) October 5, 2017
Don't you think it's time to put an end to manual scavenging. It's deplorable to let this happen in a society

I thought manual scavenging was illegal in India. This is surely something to be fixed, not celebrated? https://t.co/fU33oGA0eV

We can’t even blame the trollers. It is actually quite disturbing to imagine a human doing it. We look up to Akshay with great respect for all his efforts for our country, both onscreen and off-screen. He has a huge fanbase and we expect really wise opinions from him. Realising the gravity of the situation Akshay finally decided to do some damage control by engaging with his followers.
Completely with you on this, use machines and not men https://t.co/hdZJAEyTls

I agree that municipal corporations should ensure that sanitation workers always have and use protective clothing and appropriate equipment https://t.co/hfDGjNO1sJ

I'm sure there is…it's a slightly dated article but so much to learn from Sweden https://t.co/PREXNRoWvs https://t.co/KxABydin20

In the time when efforts are being made for completely eradicating the practice of human scavenging which not only is inhumane in nature but has also claimed many lives, irresponsible and ill-informed statements by a social influencer would surely do no good to the society. Akshay’s upcoming movie ‘Padman’ is about Arunachalam Muruganantham, the man who wore a sanitary pad to break a taboo. We hope Akshay continues doing such socially relevant movies and create a better impact on the society.
