Wrestling her way out in the freestyle 69 kg event by defeating Taiwan’s Chen Wenling, Divya Kakran won bronze for India at the Asian Games. Recently, in a felicitation ceremony, the sports star slammed Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal for lack of support to the athletes in the union territory.

From her journey of playing nationals and her family’s condition being so worse that her father was seen selling langots outside the same stadium she played her matches in, to holding a bronze under her name, Divya has turned the odds in her favour.

After her bronze, the State Government organized a felicitation ceremony for the athletes and she slammed the Government for showing no support to its athletes when they actually needed it.

In the video she can be seen slamming, “You’ve gathered us today to congratulate us but there’s no support provided when we need it most. If we’re given that support at the right time then we can even win gold”.
“I’d won a medal at the Commonwealth Games (in Gold Coast, Australia, earlier this year) and you had told me that I will receive more help going forward. I gave all the help I needed in writing but even my phone calls were not answered,” Divya added.

Meanwhile, during the ceremony, the Delhi CM announced that the prize money for the players who won medals at Asian games will be increased.

“We have raised reward amount for winners of Asian Games. Reward for gold medallists raised from Rs.20 lakhs to Rs.1 Crore, for silver medalists from Rs.14 lakhs to Rs.75 lakhs, for bronze medalists from Rs.10 lakhs to Rs.50 lakhs,” CM Kejriwal said.
“Also, we will arrange employment for them,” he added.

While athletes in Haryana are getting huge cash prizes and credit for their performances, the Delhi Government was making promises that were nowhere near to getting fulfilled. Even when PM Modi and actor Anil Kapoor congratulated Divya for her success at the Asian Games, and her own CM didn’t give her credits for the same.

It is never wrong to speak up for yourself. She has suffered a lot in her past days of routines and practice. If she would have given proper infrastructure and diet she would have excelled more in her journey. Better late than never, the Delhi Government realized their responsibility and are showing their support to the athletes. It is because of her that the upcoming athletes will not go through the same problems that she faced and will give full time to their routine to make India proud.
