A few weeks back it was reported how a techie couple from Bengaluru was assaulted twice in the same night and even the JB Nagar cops had refused to help citing election duty as a reason. In yet another horrific incident which proves even IT city Bengaluru is not safe for women, on 1st June, a 26 year old woman who is a resident of JB Nagar took an OLA cab from her residence to the airport at around 2 am for catching her flight to Mumbai.

According to the women, once the journey started, the cab driver later identified as Arun V, took a different route and when she questioned the move he replied that the route was toll free and faster. After sometime when the victim came to know that he had taken a secluded route, she asked the driver to turn around and take the regular route. To her horror, the driver stopped the car at a secluded spot, locked the doors and started molesting her. He also threatened the woman to get her raped by his friends if she tried to oppose.

The driver then snatched her phone and threatened to kill her if she screamed for help.  “The accused reportedly asked her to strip as he wanted her pictures. He tried to strangle her when she refused. Fearing for her life, the woman complied and gave him the photos he wanted. He clicked the pictures on her phone and shared it through WhatsApp to his phone number.” an investigating officer was quoted as saying by Bangalore Mirror.

The woman was then dropped by the driver around 3 am at the airport where he also claimed that we will be leaving for Dubai the next day and threatened to leak her pics on social media if she complained. After reaching Mumbai, the woman then mailed her complaint to city police commissioner following which the case was assigned to JB Nagar police station.

Within hours of the filing of the complaint, the driver was arrested by the Cops with the help of his details retrieved from the OLA app. A case of assault or use of criminal force to woman with intent to disrobe (IPC 354B), voyeurism (IPC 354C), assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty (IPC 354), attempt to murder (IPC 307), putting person in fear of death (IPC 387), wrongful confinement (IPC 342) has been registered against the driver.

As per a media report, it was also found that police verification of the accused was not done by OLA Cab and the cops have sent a notice to OLA in this regard.

The OLA spokesperson responded to the incident saying that they have blacklisted the driver. We fail to understand how blacklisting a molester will solve the problem once he has already assaulted someone, why the police verification was not done by OLA? We hope the new government takes out some time for its citizens if the discussion over portfolio allocation is complete. People have not elected the government representatives to enjoy the game of power and money when even the citizens of the capital city are not safe.
