In a welcome move towards increasing social acceptance of transgender people, a community toilet was inaugurated in the Mangalwara area in Bhopal for the transgender community. The inauguration was done by Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan.
PTI quoted Bhopal Mayor Alok Sharma as saying, “The toilet, constructed by the Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC), is the first of its kind in India“.
Earlier also many steps have been taken towards increasing the acceptance of transgenders in the society. From providing jobs in Kochi metro to appointing as Principal, various govt are taking progressive steps towards their welfare. However, in the Kochi metro case once the news about their appointment was in public domain, transgender employees were forced by the society to vacate their houses and in the latter case, disappointed by the treatment by the students and other staffs the principal had stepped down from the post.
PTI quoted MP CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan as saying “The third gender is yet to get the respect it deserves. My government will ensure equal rights for them. The administration will also be directed to take stringent action against anti-social elements that defame the community”.
While the step taken by the govt is appreciable it’s the duty of the citizens that we welcome transgender individuals with open arms and stop looking down at them.
