In a strange case of forced marriage, a man was kidnapped in Mokama district of Bihar where he had gone to attend a marriage and was forced to marry at gunpoint to a girl.
Such marriages generally known as “Pakdua Vivah” are a common practice in some villages in Bihar where men are kidnapped and forced to marry a girl who generally belongs to an underprivileged family or is not getting marriage proposals due to certain physical conditions.
Once the forced marriage is performed the groom is forced to accept the bride citing social pressure and reasons. According to News18, the incident has come to light, a month later, after the marriage video surfaced in which the groom can be seen crying.
The kidnapped man Binod Kumar is an executive engineer with Bokaro Steel Plant and is now being pressurised by girl’s family to accept the marriage.“They (the girl’s family) befriended me during the wedding and asked me to step out. They kidnapped me and took me to a home where I was forced to put vermilion in the hair of a girl. I had never seen her and I don’t know who she is,” Kumar was quoted as saying by Indiatimes.
The groom’s family members are afraid of Surendra Yadav, a strongman who was responsible for abducting Binod. The victim’s family have now approached Patna Senior Superintendent of Police Manu Maharaj for protection.
“My brother boarded Hatia-Patna express from Bokaro as he had to attend a wedding function near Patna on December 3. Surendra Yadav persuaded him to come to Mokama and he agreed. He was abducted there and taken to Pandarak where my brother was forced to marry a girl.”Binod’s brother Sanjay was quoted as saying by News18.
Binod can be seen crying in the video and shouting for help as he was beaten and forced to apply vermilion on girl’s head. A relative of the bride can also be heard saying:“We are only performing your wedding, not hanging you. Why are you crying loudly? Shut up.”
According to the reports, the family had earlier approached Pandarak police station when Binod was not traceable but instead received a call in sometime informing about the forced marriage. According to Sanjay, the cops also told him to compromise telling ‘Pakduah Vivah’ is a common practice there.
