BJP leader Wasim Bari shot dead by terrorists in J&K despite having 10 guards

“Student of life. Traveling the world on a train of thought. Trying to find the perfect balance.”

The twitter handle bio of Wasim Bari reads. He was shot dead late Wednesday night by terrorists. The BJP leader, his father, and his brother were all killed in Jammu Kashmir’s Bandipur district.

Jammu Police DGP Dilbagh Singh said Mr. Wasim and his family were sitting outside a shop near the local police station when they were attacked at around 9 PM. All three suffered injuries in the attack and were rushed to Bandipore district hospital, where they were pronounced dead.

According to PTI Bari’s brother Umar and father Bashir Ahmad were injured in the firing. They were taken to the Bandipora district hospital where they succumbed to injuries.

The incident took place despite Bari having ten personal security officers to guard him. Yet in a gross lack of professionalism, none of them were present when the militants attacked, said Vijay Kumar, the Inspector General of Kashmir Police. At the time of the incident, they were sitting on the first floor of Bari’s house, which is adjacent to the shop. All ten of his PSOs have been arrested, he added to The Hindustan Times.

A combined team of state police and army personnel have been formed and launched immediately to nab the terrorists as soon as possible.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi sought details and extended his condolences to Mr. Wasim’s family, Union Minister Jitendra Singh tweeted.

“Over the telephone, PM Narendra Modi enquired about the gruesome killing of Wasim Bari. He also extended condolences to the family of Wasim,” Mr. Singh said.

“Terrorists fired on BJP worker Wasim Bari at Bandipora. During indiscriminate firing Wasim Bari, his father Bashir Ahmad, and brother Umer Bashir got injured and shifted to hospital, but all three succumbed to their injuries,” J&K Police tweeted.

Countless other political personalities expressed condolences, including Omar Abdullah who took to Twitter to express grief.

“Sorry to hear about the murderous terror attack on the BJP functionaries and their father in Bandipore earlier this evening. I condemn the attack. My condolences to their families in this time of grief. Sadly the violent targeting of mainstream political workers continues unabated,” tweeted Omar soon after the attack.

This incident follows two recent developments notably, one, the security demand of mainstream political parties for sarpanch and panches in the valley militants shot dead a Congress Sarpanch in Larkipora area of Anantnag district. And two, NIA arresting a local youth for providing logistical support to Jaish-e-Mohammed (Jem) terrorists who carried out Pulwama terror attack in February 2019 by slamming an explosive-laden car into a CRPF convoy killing 40 troopers.

Whether this was a repercussion of that arrest or a routine terrorist attack the question remains. Another question that remains is the role of the security guards who weren’t present right during the attack. Speculations will continue, while the police work towards bringing the criminals to justice and making the Valley a safer place.
