The luxurious neighborhood of Hauz Khas in Delhi accommodates some of the renowned clubs of the city. The Social is also one of them but it’s also famous for its female bouncer Mehrunnisa Shokat Ali.

Mehrunnisa is working as a bouncer for more than 10 years and for the last three years, has done 10-hour night shifts at Social, which functions as a restaurant and co-working space seating 220 people by day, but morphs into a packed club at night.She is expert in breaking up bar fights, frisking female customers, and uncovering illegal drugs.

Mehrunnisa is well acquainted with shattering patriarchal norms of our society.She grew up in a large Muslim family in Saharanpur, U.P,  which is nearly 200 km from Delhi, she dreamed of joining the army or becoming a police officer, but her deeply conservative father opposed the idea.

But when her father’s stock market losses forced the family to move to the capital, Mehrunnisa, still in college, became the breadwinner for a household consisting of parents, two sisters, and her elder sister’s three children, beside herself.

Her younger sister, Tarannum, 27, also works as a bouncer at a bar just a 5-minute walk away from her own workplace. Together, they earn 30,000 rupees a month.

Mehrunnisa’s mother Shashi Kala Mishra aka Shama Parveen is proud of her daughters and said that her son abandoned the family soon after he found the job. “My daughter is not cheating or stealing; she is doing the job of a man, my sons don’t even visit us now. I am proud of her”.

While giving an interview to Reuters, Mehrunnisa said: “I am very proud of what I do, it’s not an easy job, taking care of people, especially women in a club, is a very big responsibility.”

The Social’s owner Riyaaz Amlani said that Mehrunnisa has helped to defuse several alcohol-fuelled quarrels. “We decided to employ women to make sure that women customers too felt safe, and we found a great match in Mehrunnisa,” says Riyaaz. He even added saying, “She was fierce and determined, and the rest is history.”

Mehrunnisa career highlights include being part of the security detail for Bollywood actresses such as Priyanka Chopra, the star of the U.S. television drama series “Quantico”, Preity Zinta and Vidya Balan.

It’s really amazing to see these female bouncers out there who have smashed all the stereotypes and are ready to take up any challenge faced by them.
