The ongoing debate over women empowerment and security in our country is not hidden to anyone. Where some of our political leaders and “samajik thekedars” are advising the Indian women what to wear, what to to drink and where to go and when. In another part of world a woman from Indian origin has yet again decided to prove that only zenith is the limit. Following the footsteps of kalpana chawla and Sunita Williams yet another Indian woman is ready to get launched into space.
Meet 32 year old , Dr Shawna Pandya who is a neurosurgeon working as a general physician in Canada’s Alberta University Hospital. She has become the third Indian-origin woman after Kalpana Chawla and Sunita Williams to fly to space.
Pandya who was born in Canada has her roots in Mumbai. She qualified to fly for NASA when she was shortlisted along with one more candidate from 3,200 brilliant minds after she topped the Citizen Science Astronaut (CSA) program. She will fly with eight other astronauts in space missions scheduled to take off by 2018.
Shawna is a neurosurgeon,author,opera singer,taekawan-do champion and is also trained in Muay Thai with a Navy SEAL! All this at just an age of 32.
“If you prioritise your passions and commitments, it’s wonderful how much you can achieve,” she told Hindustan Times. Pandya will be doing experiments in bio-medicine and medical science in space.
According to a report by HT, she is part of a project “Polar Suborbital Science in the Upper Mesosphere” (PoSSUM), which will study the effects of climate change. She will also work on Physiological, Health, and Environmental Observations in Microgravity (PHEnOM), and is also a prime crew member of Project Poseidon, a 100-day underwater mission at the Aquarius Space Research Facility,Florida.
She is currently in Mumbai where she is giving motivational speeches in schools and other organistations.
