Even after we claim India is progressing in every field, looks like there is still one field which has not improved much, the area is sadly girl’s education. Girls in India are discriminated in almost every field. They are less likely to be born, less likely to be taken to doctors when they are sick, less likely to go to private school and less likely to graduate from secondary school and university. The female literacy rate in India is still around 53.87%.
Queen Rania of Jordan once said, “If you educate a woman, you educate a family, if you educate a girl, you educate the future.”
In an effort to recognize these obstacles and celebrate girl child, Bengaluru Mayor R. Sampath Raj has declared that the first female baby born in the new year through a normal delivery at any civic hospital in the city would get free education up to degree level.
According to media reports, Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) will deposit an amount of five lakh rupees in a joint bank account of its commissioner and the girl child. The interest generated from this savings will be used for the education of the girl.
The mayor also said,”Pregnant women who go to civic hospitals for delivery are from poor families and unfortunately think a girl child is a burden for them to bring up.”
The hospital officials will record the birth timings of female babies who will be born after December 31 midnight. The girl who will be coming to this world first will be declared as the winner.
“Since a Caesarean-section birth can be induced any time, civic doctors have decided to reward only the girl child born through a natural process,” said the Mayor.
In Bangalore, there are 32 health centres in the city which are run by the civic body, out of which 26 have the maternity wards.
Even though it looks like an insignificant gesture looking at the magnitude of the problem, it’s definitely a beautiful way to start the new year.
