We have come across a lot of incidents in the recent past where the schools have put children under immense pressure with their corporal punishments.Reportedly, after the punishments, some Kids are going in a depression and are not willing to go to the school again. A Kerala school girl had also committed suicide after her teacher period shamed her.
In a heart-wrenching incident from Gorakhpur, a Navneet Prakash, a class 5 student at St Anthony’s Convent School committed suicide by consuming poison after his teacher allegedly punished him. The boy had consumed the poison on 15th September and died at the BRD Medical College on Wednesday.
A suicide note has been recovered from his schoolbag in which he claimed that he had decided to end his life as he was subjected to harsh punishment by his teacher. The 11-year-old kid alleged that the teacher had made him stand on the table for 3 periods over some issue.
Here is what the kid wrote in his letter
(Papa aaj mera pehla exam tha, meri mam class teacher ne mujhe 9.15 tk rulaya, khada rakha…isliy kyunki wo chaplooson ki baat manti hai.aaj maine soch liya hai ki main marne wala hoon. Meri aakhri iksha meri ma’am ko kisi bachhe ko itni badi saza na dene ko kahein )
“Papa, Today is my first exam and my class teacher kept me crying till 9:15 am. I was kept standing for three periods. She only listens to her flatterers.Today I have decided to end my life. Please ask my ma’am not to give such a severe punishment to anyone.
Bye Mom And Dad.)
Navneet’s father has blamed the authorities of his school for the tragedy.“The incident hurt the child so much that he took the extreme step,” he said in a police complaint.
Angered over the incident the parents hurled stones at the school building, damaging window panes and vehicles to which the school staffs also retaliated before the police took the control of the situation.
The Superintendent of Police, Vinay Kumar Singh, said that an FIR was registered at the Shahpur Police Station under Section 306 (abetment to suicide) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
AsianAge quoted Vinay as saying,”We have arrested the teacher, Bhavna, and the matter is being investigated. The parents found the suicide note and a glass wrapped in a polythene from which a foul smell was coming out from his school bag. Probably, he has consumed some poison as foam was coming out from his mouth when the family members rushed him to the hospital“.
Schools and the teachers need to learn lessons regarding sensitivity towards children. From corporal punishments to sexual assaults and murders, we have seen everything in last few weeks. It’s high time that schools take the safety and mental wellness of the kids seriously, else these events can cause a lifelong scar in their lives.
