“I DON’T WANT OTHER CHILDREN OF THE SAME DISEASE TO MEET THE SAME FATE. I WANT TO DEDICATE MY CHILD TO DOCTORS’ RESEARCH SO THAT THEY CAN DEVELOP MEDICINE FOR SSP. IF THAT’S NOT POSSIBLE, I SEEK EUTHANASIA FOR HIM.”

It’s no filmy dialogue but a father’s pain. Dinesh Maisurya, a diamond polisher from PM’s own state, Gujarat has urged this to the Prime Minister himself. While we freak at the very thought of losing a loved one, the deadly disease Subacute Sclerosing Panencephalitis (SSPE) has compelled this father to beg euthanasia for his 12 YO son, Parth.

Yes, you read it right. Euthanasia. Mercy killing. Active, which a lethal drug is administered to kill the patient. Or passive, when all life support systems are withdrawn and the patient is left to die once his advancement to permanent vegetative state is confirmed. India currently has not allowed active euthanasia though passive is carried out in extraordinarily rare cases.

SSP, a neurologic disorder that, with due progress renders the patient disabled. Patient behaves abnormally and undergoes seizure attacks as frequently as 10 minutes. And it’s one of those fatal illnesses, whose cures are yet to be found.

Parth has been under immense pain since last 2 years and is slowly succumbing to this disease. Dinesh had written a letter to PM seeking help for his son. As a result of which Parth was shifted to AIIMS, New Delhi with administrative help. Doctors have given words, that there is no coming back to life. Currently, his treatment is going on in Ahmedabad Civil Hospital, closer to his home. But his condition is deteriorating.

This kid has already suffered much more than an average human’s threshold in last two years and now, his father has come up with his plea for euthanasia to finally put an end to his son’s agony. He has also granted permission to the AIIMS doctors to study his case post death and find a cure so that others don’t have to go through this hell. It’s amazing how people don’t get rid of good despite every sorrow life throws at them.

Debates have always been fought on euthanasia. But we here, instead of playing logics and presenting viewpoints, simply pray almighty for the poor boy and his family to find peace ashore this pain.
