The diamond hub of India, Gujrat has currently seen an ugly face of poverty when a 14 YO boy named Riddhish attempted suicide for a reason so small.
He was asked by his school to inform his parents how soon they need to pay his school fees on Wednesday. His father Keshav brought him to New Civil Hospital after he allegedly consumed phenyl at his residence in Katargam. He did so because he was aware of his family’s financial conditions and that, it’s difficult for them to pay his fees, as reported by Times of India.
“The school officials did not send him home but asked him to get fees and his father. His fees were not paid for last three academic years,” managing trustee of Sarvodaya Vidyalaya Vasant Kohli was quoted by the media.
“Around 25% fees were paid in last two years after several reminders. The parents never came to meet the school authorities despite reminders,” Kohli added.
“I have ordered an inquiry and two inspectors of education department will submit a report after detailed inquiry,” district education officer, Surat, U N Rathod was quoted by TOI.
It still raises a question mark on how a child could take such lethal for this reason. If there are more sides to it or if anything was wrong with the behavior of school authorities that had an impact on the teenager’s mind needs to be sorted out.
The teenager is now out of danger but the incident shows the sad reality of our times where on one hand people are busy earning money with wrong means and on the other, a kid is attempting suicide as his family can’t afford his fees.
