Adopting or helping orphan kids is considered as one of the noblest things someone can do. Causing harm to these parentless kids already facing the wrath of the destiny is the last thing one can think of. However, for the molesters and perverts, these thing doesn’t matter.
According to a Hindustan Times report, 3 employees of Balika Ashram, a govt orphanage for girls in Himachal Pradesh have been arrested for alleged sexual harassment of 6 girls. The incident is of Balika Ashram, in Chilli village of the Tissa subdivision, where six girls all aged between 11 and 18 years have alleged sexual harassment by three staff.
“The girls used to feel sleepy soon after having dinner and remained drowsy till late the next morning. The girls said they felt something wrong had happened with them at night,” the report quoted a source who doesn’t want to be named, as saying.
The accused were a clerk, a cook and a sweeper of the orphanage. After the complaint, the 6 girls have been shifted to Balika Ashram in Chamba. All three accused will be produced in court today. After the complaint was registered, medical examinations of the victim were carried out and the report is also expected to come today.
The horror that was going on in the ashram was unveiled after a fifteen-year-old, class 10th student told in-charge Juma Khan about the sexual harassment. Acting on her complaint 33 other girls were also counseled later, out of which 5 more girls came forward and alleged harassment by the 3 staff.
The police officials are also trying to collect the CCTV evidence. One of the police officials to told to HT “There are three CCTV cameras in the child protection home but police could only get a single day’s recording. The staff said the cameras were out of order“.
However, the staff members of the ashram have alleged that the Police officials were slow to react. On the condition of anonymity, an officer in the state women and child development department said, “The policemen visited the child protection home in uniform. They should have come in plainclothes. The child protection home is situated in a remote area and six girls have alleged sexual harassment. This does not mean only six were abused. The number could be more. All inmates should be medically examined“.
The statements of all six girls were recorded and the accused were booked under Section 354 A (punishment for sexual harassment) of the Indian Penal Code and Section 12 of POSCO Act on Tuesday, superintendent of police Virender Tomar said.
The girls have now been shifted to a Balika Ashram in Chamba and security has also been increased in the orphanage.Looking at the secluded location of the orphanage it is quite expected that the accused might have seen this as a good opportunity to sexually harass the orphan kids.Following the incident, the male staff of the orphanage has been replaced with female employees.
