While the whole nation was still struggling to get away and relieved of the scams happening this year, it seems that Maharashtra’s Secretariat was having its own scam all throughout.
It turns out to be that the Secretariat was filled with rats, the number rising to over 3 lakhs. It was apparently declared that the company which was hired to drive away the rats from the mantralaya was given 6 months to do the job which was later reduced to 2 months, while they finished the job of killing 3,19,400 rats in a week between May 3 and 10, 2016.

Former revenue minister and senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Eknath Khadse raised the obvious questions about the disposal of the dead rats, the system which was following the process and whether the chemical poison was illegally stocked in Mantralaya. Interestingly, at that moment it was also mentioned that the company did not seek any permission from the Home Department and General Administration Department (GAD) which are both headed by the Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

“If the contractor is to be believed, he killed 45,628 rats in a day or 31 rats per minute,” the senior BJP leader said during a discussion on budgetary allocations in the assembly. He said BMC had killed six lakh rats across the city in 2015 and 2016. “The contractor was paid Rs 1.5 for every rat,” he told reporters outside the assembly later.

In the loop of aforementioned, it was also brought to notice that it could be a possibility that the 84-year-old farmer who committed suicide in mantralaya after his grievances were not addressed, was a part of this scam and that he could have extracted the poison from the stock because any suspicious chemical is not allowed in the building.

Later on, after having a look at the contract, it was informed that the company ceases to exist as there is nothing on the address mentioned in the contract and that the owner of the company died in 2008 after which the family had an impression that the company was closed.

In response to Khadse’ allegations, minister of state for general administration department Madan Yarawar said, “The information related to the tender allotted to kill the rats in 2016 will be obtained and tabled in the house in seven days.”
