We live in a society where rape is still considered a taboo and rape survivors have to face isolation from the society along with victim shaming. Due to the vibes associated with it in a lot of cases, women have no other option apart from remaining unmarried. However, a youth from Berhampur, Odisha has set an example by marrying a gang rape survivor even after she had shared all the details with him and had left it up to him whether he wants to marry her or not.

The youth is also fighting with her and has approached the police to have the rapists arrested. Rahul, 29(name changed) married Pooja,19(name changed) on 21st April. Pooja is a plus III student and Rahul is a manager in a private company. Two weeks after the marriage Rahul took Pooja to Khurda Police station to lodge a complaint against the offenders.

The police have solved the case on Tuesday and arrested one of the accused Hrudananda Jaisingh alias Babula. “There are three other accused in the case. They are on the run. We will nab them soon,” TOI quotes inspector Ranjit Sahu. “We completed all formalities including the medical test of the girl and recorded her statement before the magistrate as well,” Sahu added.

The cops were surprised when the couple approached them and narrated Pooja’s horrible experience. Pooja stated in her complaint that she had been raped several times in last two years and the offenders had also taken her obscene image on their mobile phones for the purpose of blackmailing her in future.

“I come from a lower middle-class family and could not gather the courage to go to the police or disclose to any other, because my tormentors threatened to throw acid on my face, kill my parents and make the video public,”Pooja told the reporter. “But I said all that happened to me to Rahul when both our families finalized our marriage. I didn’t want to hide anything and create a problem in our married life later,”TOI quotes Pooja.

Rahul said that once their marriage got fixed he got a chance to talk with Pooja where she informed him about everything and left it up to him whether he marries her or not. Rahul said he was overwhelmed by the courage and plainspoken words of Pooja and told her that he was not going to change his decision and promised to help her in getting justice.

We idealise their love, courage and attitude towards injustice caused to them. Hope every human looks up to rape victims the way Rahul did.
