3 people have been arrested in a case related to moral policing by the residents of a society in Thane. The incident took place in Palava city in Dombivali. In the video that went viral, the residents of the society can be seen making the youngsters to kneel down and do sit-ups for hanging around in Xperia mall which is located in the society. Earlier the residents of the society had objected to the fact that these couple who did not belong to township were still using the mall which was located in the society.
They have also alleged that the youngsters who were mostly college students would often bunk classes and land up in a garden right next to Pawar international School. The residents said that they would often indulge in PDA which the residents found obscene, mainly because it was in the plain sight of school kids.
The couples were earlier warned by the people from the township for their activities. On Wednesday a few vigilantes from the society caught a few couple including minors, took down their phones and made them kneel and do sit-ups.This continued for an hour. The couples were also abused and manhandled by the vigilantes.
The vigilantes recorded the act on their mobiles and also took selfies while punishing the youngsters. Later, the videos were uploaded on social media and soon it went viral which made the police take notice of the incident. Thane Police Commissioner Parambir Singh took cognizance of the issue. Singh asked officials from Manpada police station to take appropriate action against those responsible. The police arrested three residents, Yogesh Patil, Shailesh Kurle and Shreekant Shinde, on Wednesday. The three were later released on bail.
“The residents didn’t complain once to the police about the youngsters and took the matter into their own hands. They were arrested and we are looking for the victims to get more details on the incident. Accordingly, more sections will be added against the accused“, an Indiatoday report quoted senior police inspector Gajanan Kabjule from Manpada police station as saying.
Our Take: We at “The Indian Feed” strongly condemn any act of moral policing. In India PDA by couples is always seen as an ‘obscene act’ by the society. Even simply hugging and holding acts could invite the wrath of the so-called moral police. This is the other side of the digital India where two consenting individuals could not hold each other’s hands. Moral policing needs to be condemned in the same way as we condemn lynching. These goons should have no right to interfere in someone else’s private life and harass them publicly. Strict action must be taken against these vigilantes for taking laws into their own hands and shaming people in the guarding the Indian culture.
