In a government school for girls in Kundal village of Punjab, two teachers allegedly stripped down girl students to find out who was wearing a sanitary napkin after finding one discarded in the school washroom. The students were very uncomfortable with this form of interrogation. A video of two girls crying after being stripped by the teachers has gone viral and CM Amrinder Singh has ordered the Chief Education secretary to personally look into the matter, take necessary actions and submit a report about the same by Monday i.e 5th November 2018.

The officials commented that instead of this kind of checking the teachers could have given the kids proper education on the disposal of sanitary napkins.

Sanitary napkin still a taboo/ source

The District Education Officer was asked to visit the school and inquire about the same. On speaking to the students and their parents, the involvement of two teachers was noted. The further decision will be taken after receiving the inquiry report, according to the sources.

Last year, in Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu, a 12-year old committed suicide because of being tortured by a teacher in school. Upon investigating further, it was revealed that a teacher period-shamed the kid a few days before she took her life. The girl was unaware of the bodily changes that she was undergoing, which is natural, and stained her school uniform. Upon seeking help from the teacher, the teacher humiliated her in front of the entire class which included boys too and gave her a piece of dusting cloth to help herself. Palayamkottai police booked the teacher for period shaming, according to The New Indian Express.

Sex and Adolescent education is still a taboo in our country. Menstruation is one of the key reasons for human existence and yet menstruating women are looked down upon. Teachers are supposed to be the first ones to inculcate values and knowledge, in the students, on all of these issues. Instead, in the above cases, we get to witness the contradictory. Teachers and parents can’t be silent on issues like these. Menstruation is a natural biological phenomenon and there is nothing to be ashamed about.  Education on these issues is a must for both girls and boys, for girls need to understand how they are supposed to deal with menstruation and boys need to learn to respect girls going through this.
