Remember how much we cheered for our Women Cricket team when they were making us proud while playing Women’s World Cup recently? Wasn’t it sorry to see them lose in the Finals from the England team? And yet we trust them and look forward to seeing them win soon!
But unfortunately, despite such magnificent performance by our girls on the foreign ground, there are still people who think girls are not meant to hold bats or hit sixes.
A news from Sonipat, Rohtak talks of how a girl in her 2nd year in BA curriculum who loves to play cricket in college has faced her brothers’ threats of being shot dead someday if she continues to study or play cricket. She was even forcefully dropped out of college by her two brothers. Neither has she ever received any support from her teachers or mentors.
All this she states in her FIR, after filing which her brothers were booked by the police under IPC Sections 506 (criminal intimidation) and 34 (committing a crime with similar intention).
Hindustan Times quoted the police officer as saying, “She had come to us with a complaint on Sunday, following which we had verbally warned her brothers to let her study and play cricket. But, when she complained again two days later of the same behavior, we registered a criminal case against her brothers.”
We applaud the girl for her act of bravery and standing against even her family for her rights. It is such a shame to see that the girls across the world are reaching places and here some families think that a girl should only remain confined to the boundaries of her home.
We hope that after the complaint the family doesn’t try to harm the girl.
