Samajwadi Party leader Abu Azmi, who has a track record of putting the foot in mouth while speaking, has done it again. Commenting on the shocking mass molestation that happened in Bengaluru on New Year’s eve, Azmi has blamed the victims and their dressing for the assault.

“In these modern times, the more skin women show, the more they are considered fashionable. If my sister or daughter stays out beyond sunset celebrating December 31 with a man who isn’t their husband or brother, that’s not right,” said Azmi.“Partying late night in half attire, blindly following western culture, has never been our culture. Ladies hailing from well-to-do families, be it from Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan or UP, they come out in decent attire and mostly with their family members,” he said, when asked about alleged harassment of women in Bangalore during the New Year eve.

His illogical arguments didn’t stop there. The leader went on to tell that women attracted men to them. “If there’s gasoline, there will be fire. If there’s spilled sugar, ants will gravitate towards it for sure,” he added.

Later speaking to Times Now he provided some opinion on how to stop sexual assault on women. “ If you go to Dubai, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, where the law is very strict, such things don’t happen there. And there, women don’t roam around alone at night”

“Women should not go out with a man who is not their father, brother or her husband. If you follow the system of boyfriend and girlfriend, these things are happening many times “. “If a girl agrees to it, then there is no crime, there will not be a case, and if the same girl disagrees, then it becomes a rape case”.

Earlier the Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara called the incident unfortunate and blamed women’s ‘western dressing’ for such incidents.

Eyewitness accounts and reporters suggest that women were molested and groped and lewd remarks were also passed by miscreants late night on new year on MG Road, Brigade Road area of Bengaluru even as it was claimed that 1,500 police personnel had been deployed to control the crowds.

When the whole nation is still in a state of shock and anger regarding the mass molestation, these statements by our leaders simply make us wonder where is our country heading?
