Facebook and social media have the power to do great things if used properly, from running impactful campaigns to helping people during tragedy we have seen everything. Here is one more example where Facebook has been used for a noble cause in a quite innovative manner.
A child rights activist on Thursday said that Sushila Bishnoi, 19 from Rajasthan has proved in court that she was illegally married off to a drunkard when she was a minor, with the help of FB messages of his husband.
Reportedly, Bishnoi had earlier appealed to a court to annul her underage marriage, but her husband denied that they were engaged. Sushila then took help of an activist after which they scrutinized her husband’s FB messages where she found out the evidence for her case.
The messages proved that she was married off when she was underage.”Many of his friends had posted congratulatory messages on his Facebook page,“Kriti Bharti, an activist was quoted as saying by the media. Kriti is an activist with Sarathi Trust charity which has helped in the annulment of many child marriages in Rajasthan.
The court accepted the proof and declared the marriage invalid.
According to the report, the couple was married off at a secret wedding ceremony in 2010, when the girl was just 12. In Rajasthan minor girls who are married before 18 generally stays with their parents until they reach the age of 18.
Bishnoi’s parents were forcing her to move to her husband’s house but the man was a drunkard.Sushila then ran away from her house and met Bharti who then helped her in the annulment of her marriage in the court.
In an interview to the news agency, AFP Sushila said ‘I wanted to study but my family and my in-laws wanted me to live with a drunkard. It was about life and death, and I chose to live.”
The courage shown by Sushila is unmatchable and really sets an example for other child brides out there. Parents need to understand that there is a world beyond marriage and they need to provide an opportunity to their children and not kill their dreams instead.
