In a shocking case of apathy from Odisha, after being allegedly denied treatment, a pregnant tribal woman had to deliver a baby girl near a drain in the premises of a government hospital. The incident happened at Sahid Laxman Nayak Medical College and Hospital (MCH) in Koraput, Odisha on this Friday.
According to The Quint, the lady is Dhanei Muduli from Taljaniguda village of Mastiput panchayat. Her husband was admitted to the hospital for the treatment of fever since Wednesday. On December 14th she came to the hospital with her sister and mother to visit her husband. Suddenly she started experiencing labor pain and rushed to the Out Patient Department (OPD) for admission. The doctors asked her to present the medical reports and prescriptions but Dhanei hadn’t brought any documents with her due to which the doctors didn’t allow her into the OPD.
Gouramani Muduli, mother of the woman said to the media,”The medical staff refused to admit my daughter as we had not brought the prescription and required documents. My daughter delivered the child near the drain after she was refused admission.”
After getting no other options, Dhanei had to go to a lonely place behind a tea stall on the hospital premises. Finally, she delivered the baby near an unused drain in unhygienic condition. Almost after an hour, she was noticed by people passing by and they took her to the hospital.
However medical officials have denied the allegation of not admitting the woman. Lalit Mohan Rath, chief district medical officer of Koraput said,”The woman delivered the child while answering nature’s call. She had not approached any hospital staff either for the medical check-up or for admission.”
We hope a proper investigation is carried out in the case and action is taken against the hospital authorities if any irresponsible behaviour is found.
