The CM took a similar decision last month when he announced the city of Allahabad to be renamed as Prayagraj. The ruling government calls this move as restoring history. The city of Allahabad was invaded by the Mughal emperor Akbar in the 16th century. The move has been criticized as a step towards saffronization of the country.
Contributions of the leaders from various religions in developing a rich and diverse cultural heritage of the country can’t be rubbed off by the present government. The distress amongst the ruling party leaders over Muslim or British names of places in the country is needless. An attempt to erase the historical identities of the country could be problematic.
According to the Reuters investigation report, The central government had appointed a committee last year to revamp the cultural history of the nation in order to prove that India is a nation of and for Hindus. How ironical is that when the preamble of the country’s constitution clearly states, amongst other things, that India is a SECULAR nation, which means that the state is neutral in religious matters. In the above cases, the decisions of the state are clearly in favor of a particular religion giving them an ego-boost and an upper hand upon the minorities.
In an era where we have numerous issues to tackle, from poverty to unemployment to farmers committing suicide, the country is still stuck on fighting religions. It’s high time to invest our resources on matters of actual development rather than religious dominations.
