Clinching a Cardinal seat by a woman in one of the top corporate companies in a male-dominated society is not less than a dream come true. But, for Indra’s mother being on the top of the hierarchical structure of any corporation can’t be an excuse for not discharging your personal life’s responsibility.
Indra Nooyi, CEO of $166 billion company Pepsico was sharing a list of lessons she’s learned after 10 years of running the company. While sharing her life lessons she narrated one of the lessons she learned from her mother in a very unexpected manner.
In 2001, Indra Nooyi was named the president of PepsiCo. But the night she came home after being named to the president, she wrote on LinkedIn, her parents happened to be visiting. Here’s Nooyi describing that night :
“I’ll never forget coming home after being named President of PepsiCo back in 2001. My mother was visiting at the time.
‘I’ve got great news for you,’ I shouted. She replied, ‘It can wait. We need you to go out and get some milk.’
“So I go out and get milk. And when I come back, I’m hopping mad. I say, ‘I had great news for you. I’ve just been named President of PepsiCo. And all you want me to do is go out and get milk.’
“Then she says, ‘Let me explain something to you. You may be President of PepsiCo. But when you step into this house, you’re a wife and mother first. Nobody can take that place. So leave that crown in the garage.'”
Indra further wrote, “No matter who we are, or what we do, nobody can take our place in our families. Now, I’ll admit, I’ve found it’s rarely possible to be the kind of mother, wife, employee, and person you want to be – all at the same time. Often, you need to make a choice, and that’s especially true if you want to be CEO. There’s no way around it.”
Indra is now acting Chairperson and CEO of Pepsico. Since she started as CFO in 2001, the company’s annual net profit has risen threefold from $2.7 billion to $6.5 billion. She has consistently ranked among the World’s 100 Most Powerful Women. She has taken the company to greater heights under her visionary and strategic leadership.
Indra Nooyi is an inspiration to all females out there who want to pursue, follow their passion and dreams by continuously accepting and overcoming every challenge thrown on the way of success. Her life is a perfect example of work and-home life balance and is certainly an example for people like us who struggle to find this balance.
